Qur’ān & Hadīth Resources

The Holy Quran

In Shia Islam the Quran is regarded as the ultimate and unaltered word of God (Allah), revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of approximately 23 years. We hold that the Quran is a complete and comprehensive guide for all aspects of life, and it is viewed with great reverence. We believe that the Quran is both a spiritual and practical guide, containing principles of faith, law, and morality.

We place significant emphasis on the interpretation of the Quran, known as Tafsir, which is often guided by the teachings of the Imams, particularly the Twelve Imams in Twelver Shia Islam. The Imams are believed to possess a deep understanding of the Quran and provide context and explanations that help us understand its verses more profoundly.

Hadīth

In Twelver Shia Islam, Ḥadīth (حديث), or “riwaya” (روایة), refers to the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Imams (peace be upon them). It is crucial alongside the Quran for understanding Islamic teachings.

Studied through sciences like riwayat al-hadith (source study) and dirayat al-hadith (content study), Ḥadīth is classified by authenticity and connection. Key collections include the “Four Books”: al-Kafi by al-Kulayni, Tahdhib al-ahkam and al-Istibsar by al-Shaykh al-Tusi, and Man la yahduruh al-faqih by al-Shaykh al-Saduq.
